Mindfulness for Youth

Why mindfulness for youth and children?

Mindfulness is the skill of directing attention to what is happening in the present moment, with an open and accepting attitude, without judgment. It involves all our senses, making us aware of our body, emotions, thoughts, and surroundings. Mindfulness is a life skill that can deepen our sense of well-being and fulfillment. I also call mindfulness attention training.

Mindfulness in everyday life is intended for young people aged 11 to 17 to improve focus, emotional regulation, self-awareness, social connection, and the development of care for their own mental health.

Over nine weeks, step by step, through various activities and techniques, we learn the practical application of mindfulness and gain the skill of practicing mindfulness.

Why do young people need mindfulness?

Young people are often “on autopilot,” unaware of what they are doing and where they are. Unconscious of their body, their reactions. In a state of distraction. When they go through attention training, they acquire the skill to manage their minds. Their life is no longer like on autopilot; they take control of it themselves. Mindfulness is a scientifically proven method of mental training that helps them consciously direct their attention and aids in the development of emotional intelligence.

Results of mindfulness training for youth:

  • Increased ability to focus and concentrate
  • Increased creativity in children, perseverance, and self-discipline
  • Encourages brain development in areas crucial for children’s intellectual and emotional life
  • Increased optimism, reduced stress, and contributes to overall mental health
  • Encourages the development of emotional self-regulation
  • Develops the relationship with the body and mind as a whole
  • Develops the ability for compassion and empathy
  • Develops a sense of belonging in the world

During the training, they acquire tools and skills such as:

  • How to direct their thoughts
  • Better self-awareness and expressing their needs
  • A gentler attitude towards themselves, their bodies, and their thoughts
  • Better coping with exam anxiety
  • Improved time management

Being present in the current moment without judgment is an ability that influences our mental and physical health. Practicing this skill is a valuable life skill that we can offer to young people in the long run.

About

The training lasts for 9 weeks. Before the first session, there is an introductory hour where parents participate to receive a brief introduction to what mindfulness is and how to support young people in practicing activities during and after the training.

Parent participation in the introductory hour is not a requirement for participating in the training.

Upon completion of the training, each participant receives a handbook, a link to audio recordings of mindfulness exercises, a short PDF guide for parents, and a certificate of completion approved by the UK Mindfulness Association.

Mindfulness in Everyday Life for Youth is conducted following the curriculum of the Mindfulness Association UK, which educates, supports, and empowers young people by introducing them to mindfulness in an appropriate and effective manner.
