Brainspotting
What is Brainspotting (BSP)?
In a nutshell – Where you look reveals how you feel!
BSP is a method derived from EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), developed by Dr. David Grand. It is a therapeutic approach that utilizes the visual field to locate where individuals store traumas and negative experiences in the brain. It operates by identifying, processing, and releasing key neurophysiological sources of trauma, pain (both emotional and physical), and various other symptoms. The goal of Brainspotting is to calm emotional activation in the body and the brain, ultimately easing tension in the nervous system.
BSP is a tool used within therapeutic practices. Collaboratively with the client, the therapist locates and focuses on eye positions. The client then processes and releases symptoms and experiences, primarily residing outside conscious awareness, cognitive, and verbal capacities. The therapist is there to support the client throughout this transformative process.
Brainspotting works with the brain and body through a direct approach to the autonomic and limbic systems within the central nervous system of the body. It is a physiological treatment that has profound psychological, emotional, and physical effects.
The visual field is used to locate eye positions correlated with significant internal emotional experiences. Once eye positions, or brain spots, are identified, maintaining eye fixation leads to resolving issues deep within the non-verbal, non-cognitive areas of neurophysiology.
After identification, a Brainspotting (BPS) therapist guides the client through a process of non-critical observation of internal processes – memories, cognitions, with a specific focus on bodily sensations. We refer to the client’s process as focused mindfulness. The therapist guides and supports the client, and the process continues until the client reaches a state of resolution, a state without present activation.
The mechanisms of BPS simultaneously involve activated and focused awareness. Its goal is the complete and comprehensive discharge of activation (the source of the issue) in the brain and body. BPS is a framed model with a physiological and philosophical foundation, developed both technically and relationally.
Therapists use it in combination with their previous experiences.
